 The School and the Community

Ashwater is a rural Primary School situated 1/2 a mile outside of the village of Ashwater. However, we are very much community based and as a school believe the importance of strong community links.

On Thursdays over 60s are invited to dine with the children and staff  with all enjoying the home cooked roast prepared in our own kitchen. The older children sit with the adults discussing various topics and making sure that they feel welcome at the school.

Harvest produce and spring flowers are shared amongst the village community, the children sort all of the produce out at school and with the staff in designated groups hand deliver these items.

Ashwater hosts an annual Horticultural Show and the children all enter various art and craft exhibits in the show as well as produce which is grown in the school grounds during gardening club.

Coffee afternoons, book fairs and charity fundraising events are also held throughout the year and again we are well supported by the community.

The school produces two plays per year one at Christmas which is predominantly performed by the infants and a summer play predominantly performed by the juniors. All of the community are welcome to attend both performances and they are extremely popular with all ages.

The School Buildings and Grounds

Originally built in 1900 the buildings comprised of two classrooms, a hall and the Headmasters House. There were later additions of a toilet block and kitchen, however these were replaced in 2005, giving new accommodation, comprising of a kitchen, toilets and library / ICT room. Prior to the above renovations a conservatory was added and to the infant classroom in 2001/2 to give extra space for the foundation year children.

The Headmaster's House has now been converted. The upstairs is now used as offices and resource room. The downstairs consists of three rooms and the toilets, this is predominantly used by pre-school and houses the Toy Library. Music lessons are also held in these room after school.

The grounds consist of a newly surfaced playground to the front of the school, a playing field to the rear and our environmental centre behind the old school house.

The environmental centre supports man subjects within the school curriculum and consists of a chequer board garden, pond and natural wildlife areas. The children are only allowed supervised access to this area.
